Waka Huia were used for holding ceremonial items or valued treasures and also the long tail feather of the Huia bird, The tail feathers were used to adorn the hair of Maori chiefs hence the names origins.

Combs for the hair, tiki, greenstone and bone ornaments, valued feathers and other small treasures were all kept in the Waka Huia under a special tapu. The box was hung from a rafter of a Chief's sleeping hut or kept in small Whale Rangi upheld by a very long pole.
