Mountain flax (Phormium cookianum) - Wharakriki- but commonly grows along coast lines.
Valuable Evergreen with yellowish flowers that appear in Summer followed by curious spiralled seed heads. Flax was a very important plant to early Maori who used the leaves to weave baskets, mats, cloaks, fishing lines and nets. The early European settlers found it to be better than their own varieties for rope making and milled it for export. Perennial. Landscape plant up to 2 metres. Very adaptable. Packet contains approx. 15 seeds.
